A Summit County judge will decide who will fill a vacant position on the Coventry Township board of trustees.
Trustees David Calderone and Tom Seese couldn’t agree at a special meeting Monday on who to appoint to the position so they passed five applications along to Probate Judge Todd McKenney.
The new trustee will fill the unexpired term of Brenda Patterson, who died Jan. 12 from complications of multiple system atrophy, a degenerative neurological disorder she had since 2006. Her term runs through 2013.
The following individuals have applied for the position:
• Mark Bulgrin, owner of MMR Co. Inc. in Akron. He also is the son of former Trustee David Bulgrin and a nephew of Seese.
• Edward Diebold, a regional sales manager with Advanced Pneumatics in Mentor.
• Gary L. Peters, a manager with the Summit County Developmental Disabilities board. Peters did not provide a resume to the township.
• Robert Wilson, a former township trustee who owns a commercial real estate company and aerial photography business.
• Gary Zoldesy, a retired school superintendent for Coventry Local Schools. He also is a full-time professor with Ashland University and member of the township Board of Zoning Appeals.
McKenney said he plans to interview the applicants before making the appointment.
Bulgrin, Diebold, Wilson and Zoldesy ran for trustee last fall, losing to Calderone. Bulgrin finished second.
Patterson wanted the individual who finished second in the race to be appointed and wrote a letter to that effect but didn’t sign it, Seese said. He added that he was uncomfortable appointing his nephew to the position.
“Even though the law allows me to do that ... I made it clear I’m not going to be the one to do that,” he said.
